My husband and I were married a few years before we started trying to have kids. Like most people, we thought that as soon as we were ready for children, we would be blessed with immediate news of our first pregnancy. Little did we know we had a long journey ahead of us, and the urge to have children would only intensify as we worked through that path together.
We met with Dr. O’Brien and nurse Melanie Bates at Shady Grove, and discussed our options. Based on test results, it looked like I had PCOS and our best (least invasive) option was to try IUI. Unfortunately, after many office visits, countless shots and a lot of tears, we had to cancel our IUI cycle, as I had overstimulated. After the failed IUI cycle, we moved directly on to IVF. Our first attempt was successful but, heartbreakingly, ended in miscarriage at around 8 weeks. At that time, I wasn’t sure how we would go on, but press on we did and after two more IVF cycles, we learned I was pregnant once again.
We were thrilled with the news, but extremely cautious given the first miscarriage. On Christmas Eve after I experienced cramping and bleeding, we rushed in to Shady Grove for what was most certainly going to be heartbreaking news once again. Imagine our surprise when we found out the heartbeat and baby was just fine. Not only was it just fine, there were actually TWO heartbeats…I was carrying mono-di (identical) twins! I had a somewhat trying pregnancy due to carrying multiples, but our girls were born healthy at 34 ½ weeks and continue to amaze us every day!
I cannot say enough good things about the care and kindness we received at Shady Grove. Infertility is a difficult and isolating journey, and the team at Shady Grove is both sensitive and kind. Dr. O’Brien was reassuring and patient with us, and kept us confident when we needed her to. I would urge anyone having similar issues to reach out to SGFC. It was the best decision we have ever made.
